Project description

In the course of this project, male and female inmates of a Hamburg prison were given the opportunity to swap used syringes for sterile ones. The objective was to avoid infections by introducing a more hygienic approach to the handling of injection utensils, i.e. to avoid needle sharing in the first place. Quantitative as well as qualitative data was collected before and after the introduction of the programme to evaluate the efficacy of the experiment and the pros and cons of the exchange programme. Under the given conditions, it was not possible to recommend that the project be continued.
