Project description

The aim of the three-year study was to contribute to providing greater protection against burglaries. The phenomenon of burglary was investigated in five of Germany’s biggest cities: Bremerhaven, Berlin, Hanover, Stuttgart and Munich.

The research project comprises an analysis of 800 criminal investigation and prosecution files per city and a survey of some 2,500 burglary victims on the effects and consequences of the incident, their coping strategies, and their existing knowledge and informational needs regarding prevention. The results of these quantitative studies were subsequently discussed in the respective cities during qualitative interviews with practitioners from the police force and the judiciary.
